It seems that the older and less high-end the monitor is, the harder the calibration seems to be. The LG HDTV monitor and the Gateway LCD had problems getting the correct calibration and I had to tweak the initial adjustments on the monitor a little bit more. Three displays calibrated without a hitch – the Acer laptop, the iMac, and the Westinghouse monitor. I tested the Spyder 4 Elite on five monitors: My Acer 4820TG-780S laptop screen, My LG22LG30 HDTV monitor, my friend’s iMac screen, a Gateway LCD monitor, and a Westinghouse LCD monitor.
How fast you will get your display calibrated correctly will depend on how old your screen is, but overall once it’s done, all five of the monitors that I tested look good. UPDATE: After thinking about it overnight, I decided to upgrade my rating to 5 out of 5 because the Spyder 4 Elite did really do its job. Out of curiosity, I also calibrated the display using i1 Display 2: the flesh tones were warmer than the Spyder 3 Pro's, but the black and whites had a slight blue "fill" to them (will need to dial in more custom settings with it later).Does the Spyder 4 Elite have what it takes? This is really frustrating me, as I cannot rely on MY Spyder 3 Pro unit: my work place's Spyder 3 Elite matches the prints DEAD-ON (it produces profiles that are warmer and do NOT produce profiles that slightly clip subtle highlights like MY Pro unit). My assumption is that the calibrators are NOT the same (they were manufactured at different dates of course), but how can we be sure these calibrators are CONSISTENT? Same software (exact same settings/un-touched) with two different calibrators give DIFFERENT results. Given I used the SAME exact settings, same lighting conditions (completely covered with black drape/also un-covered), same everything (double/triple checked!) and the results were the same: slightly cooler/greener profiles. my work place's Spyder 3 Elite calibrator/puck.
